Can QR codes expire?

QR images never expire, but links and platform accounts can. Learn when codes stop working, how dynamic pauses work, and how to avoid dead QR on printed materials.

The printed pattern does not have a built-in expiry date — scanners read modules the same way years later. Expiration happens when the destination or the redirect service stops working.

Common expiry scenarios

  • Dynamic platform subscription lapses and redirects disable
  • Short-link provider deletes inactive URLs
  • Campaign landing page taken down after promo ends
  • SSL certificate expires on destination domain
  • Static PDF removed from cloud storage

Preventing dead codes on print

  1. Use dynamic codes with a fallback homepage redirect
  2. Own your domain on critical static links
  3. Monitor analytics for sudden scan drops
  4. Set calendar reminders before platform renewals

Do QR standards include TTL?

No time-to-live field exists in ISO QR symbology. "Expiry" is always operational — link rot, account status, or deliberate pause. Plan durable campaigns with editable destinations.
