How QR code analytics work

Dynamic QR analytics explained: scan counts, timestamps, devices, and geo data. Learn what platforms measure, what they skip, and how to use insights for campaigns.

Analytics exist because dynamic QR codes route through a server. Each scan hits that server before redirecting — giving the platform a moment to log metadata. Static codes skip the server entirely, so there is nothing to measure.

Typical data collected

  • Timestamp and total scan count
  • Device category (mobile, tablet, desktop)
  • Operating system and browser hints from user-agent
  • Approximate geography from IP lookup
  • Referrer when scans originate from in-app browsers

What analytics are not

QR analytics are not CRM records by default — you usually do not get personal identity unless the landing page asks for it. GPS-level precision is rare; see geo accuracy. Full field list: trackable data.

Using insights in practice

  1. Compare two poster locations by scan volume over the same week
  2. Spot desktop scans (likely staff testing) vs evening mobile peaks
  3. Detect a sudden drop — often a broken landing page, not the QR art
  4. Measure uplift after swapping creative while keeping the same code
