When a QR code fails, the problem is usually physical (size, contrast, damage) or logical (dead link, wrong encoding) — rarely the scanner app itself. Work through the list below before reprinting.
Visual and print issues
- Code too small for the scanning distance — see size guidelines
- Low contrast (light gray on white, yellow on cream)
- Blurry or pixelated export — use vector formats
- Quiet zone cropped by artwork or rounded corners
- Glossy lamination glare — try matte stock
Content and link issues
- Destination URL returns 404 or SSL error
- Static code still points at an old campaign URL
- Dynamic code paused or expired on the platform
Device-specific quirks
Some iPhones need the Camera app rather than a third-party scanner. Older Android devices may lack auto-focus at close range. Read QR won't scan on iPhone for iOS tips.
Quick diagnostic flow
- Scan the on-screen preview before printing
- Scan the printed proof at the intended distance
- Open the destination URL manually in a browser
- If visual checks pass, verify the redirect in your QR dashboard
Dynamic codes on QRCode Lab show recent scan activity — if scans register but users complain, the landing page is the culprit. Broken pattern? See how to fix a broken QR code.
